About
Get-Away Farm

Situated on a beautiful 29-acre property in Prince Edward Island, Get-Away Farm is home to a bunch of animals and a few humans.

Nicole and Mac.

Meet Nicole

When I was 8, I went to riding camp. I hated it. The horses were scary and I feigned stomachaches  to get out of lessons. But, for some weird reason, the following winter, I became obsessed with learning all I could about these large, mysterious animals. A March break riding camp saw a brand-new little equestrian. She was confident and excited about her new passion.

And that passion has never waned.

I’ve been lucky to blend my career as a journalist and communications pro with my love of horses. Seventeen years ago,  with my Mom’s help, I moved from Ontario to Prince Edward Island where we started a small riding school called Get-Away Farm. Since our very early days here, Mom has wanted me to blog about our experiences. (Every writer has a blog, don’t they?) It might have taken me awhile, but here I am – excited to finally share Get-Away Farm with you!

Meet the Rest of the Get-Away Gang

Our Founding Equines - Mac and Fergie

Mac

Nicole bought a four-year-old Mac shortly after graduating from journalism school. Then, Nicole’s mom saved Fergie, a former school horse she used to ride, from a situation of neglect.

The four enjoyed many adventures together, not the least of which was the big move to “their” Prince Edward Island property in 2003.

Fergie enjoyed five years at Get-Away Farm, grazing hither and yon on the Island’s sweet grass, falling in love with Magic and generally enjoying retirement. We said goodby to this distinguished, gentle fellow in 2008 at the age of 32.

Big, goofy Mac was a young sprite compared to Ferg when he landed in PEI. He lived his senior years annoying his paddock mates (all mares) and gallumping around as only he could do. Mac suffered apparent neurological issues, which meant his legs eventually went wonky, so Nicole decided do the humane thing for her best friend. He was euthanized last spring at age  31. He and Nicole were together 27 years.

We miss them both terribly but know they’re keeping a good eye on their farm and friends.
