Beautifully Boring

Recently, I’ve noticed a lot of posts on social media asking people to share some of the good things they experienced in 2020. It’s a way to counterbalance all the crappiness I suppose.

When I asked husband Guy yesterday what our happy highlights were, we couldn’t come up with much that would rock anyone’s world.

Turns out, Get-Away Farm’s 2020 was boring. And that’s OK because everything else has been absolutely wacko.

Here’s what topped G & N’s highlight reel:

1. As Guy says, “Our first vegetable garden attempt wasn’t a failure.” Early last spring, like everyone else, I decided we would be self-sufficient should global systems collapse due to the pandemic (I’m joking. I’m not actually that paranoid. Or am I?)

Guy built a raised garden bed and armed with knowledge from my earthy friend Rosalyn, I planted two types of cucumber, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, six single onions, green peppers and hot yellow peppers. (Only realizing the latter was a spicy variety after taking a massive gnaw of my first “harvest.”) The garden wouldn’t have filled our bellies if we’d been forced into subsistence living, but it was fun and we’re adding two more beds in 2021.

I didn’t have a sweet clue what these were. Turns out, it’s a lemon cucumber. I must have mixed up my cuke containers at the garden shop.

2. We got our garage roof re-done. It needed doing, we got it done.

3. Our magical forest path is traversable. Guy and his chainsaw worked hard to get our woodland path up to good nick. It’s now fully and comfortably walkable. We love the circuit as does Marvin who finds lots of great sticks and things to sniff. Next step is clearing pokey branches so I can ride the path without getting beaned or Larry losing an eye from a sharp spruce sword.

4. Our anniversary. “But that’s every year,” notes Guy, helpfully. Yes, but September 5 marked our 10th as a married couple. Thanks to friends and fam pitching in, we were able to take a day away from the farm to explore parts of PEI either one or both of us had never seen before.

As Guy likes to remind me, about 10 minutes in I grumbled I didn’t want to be in the car all day. I managed to stop grizzling and we had a great time eating, walking, beaching and, eating some more.

Beautiful Greenwich Park was one stop on our 10th anniversary day.

5. I began prioritizing riding for the first time in years. Clearly, I’m not gearing up for the next Olympics, so I try to tell myself I don’t have to do anything other than just get on Larry’s back and enjoy, even if it’s just for a 10-minute walkabout. It’s lovely feeling like a real rider again.

Bonus highlight: Thatcher who? This is actually a big one! Guy and I found out earlier this year we’re going to be grandparents to Thatcher Edward Lucien Thibodeau. Guy’s son (my step-sonny) Marc and his fiancée Rachael are expecting the little fella in just a few weeks. Grammie and Grampie are thrilled. Question is: how many ponies and itty-bitty pairs of breeches will I be able to buy for Thatcher?

All in all, it’s been a fairly mundane 12 months on the farm. Compared to the sadness, confusion and upheaval so many have experienced, we’ve been minimally affected by the pandemic (touch wood). More than ever, our 29-acre patch on PEI has proven a sanctuary, a “get away,” and we appreciate every bit of it.

I just hope everyone can have a beautifully safe and humdrum 2021!

  1. Your farm was definitely a place of respite for me this year. I’m so thankful to have had it. Can’t wait to hear more about Thatcher! And the Nicole/Larry riding adventures. Ruby and I just did 6 bareback circles in the snow in the back yard—exciting ride. 😀

  2. What a wonderful recap Nicole and Guy! You guys accomplished a ton by the sounds of things!
What a fantastic milestone of 10 Years! Congrats to you both…Margie and I still can remember that Winnie the Pooh inspired day!
And Thatcher!!!! We love that name and we couldn’t be more happy for Marc, his fiancé and you both.
    Cheers to an amazing 2021!

  3. My tag line this year has been “may we continue to be the place where nothing much happened. 🤞🏻“ life is what happens in the present and horses, gardening and communing with nature sounds pretty fine. ❤️
